“Astrid?” Someone shook me gently.

I awoke with a start and a huge fucking cramp in my neck. Chase’s golden eyes peered at me like two candles in a dark room.

“Hey,” I groaned, rubbing my neck as I rolled it around on my shoulders. “How long have I been out?”

“Not sure. I’ve been in the den most of the day, trying to find other files to crack. Just came up here to grab a snack and saw you facedown on the table.”

I didn’t even remember falling asleep. Surprisingly, none of my note papers had stuck to my face.

“Where’s Orion?” I asked through a yawn.

“Holed up in the master bedroom staring at the walls,” he remarked, opening the fridge. “He kinda just stormed up there a few hours ago and hasn’t come out.”

I propped my elbows on the table and dropped my head in my hands. I was being a bitch earlier and he didn’t deserve it. I needed to apologize to him for acting that way, at least. Even if I didn’t feel any differently from before.

“How’s it coming along?” Chase slowly rounde the table, a chunk of venison in his hand wrapped in a paper towel. His sharp eyes flickered over my map, taking in all the details.

“It’s not,” I muttered with a frustrated sigh. “There’s no pattern or connection between any of these places that I can see. If my family is being kept at any one of these points, I can’t decipher one from the other.”

Chase looked at me. “Have you ever thought of, you know, asking us for help?”

I stared back at him. It felt so stupidly obvious in that moment. Fuck, Orion was probably trying to be helpful in the kitchen earlier. I didn’t need to chain myself to this map when I had two other perspectives to bounce off of. What kind of idiot was I?

“Be my guest.” I swept my arm out across the table.

Chase’s intense gaze lowered back to the table. “So this is all forest?” He swept a finger across the pebbles marking the eastern side of the map. “And these are cities?” His finger swept across to the western side.

“Small towns, generally but yeah,” I confirmed.

His eyes bounced between each of the marked areas. I could practically see the wheels in his head turning.

“What would you do if you were going to kidnap shifters and use them for your sick rituals?” I asked, watching him. “Target them in the towns and keep them in the woods?” My eyes fell to the map again. “Or the other way around?”

“Why does it have to be either or?” Chase mused. “The towns may be for one purpose and the woods something else entirely. Where’s your parents’ house on the map?”

“Here,” I pointed. “And Hodge’s place is here.” I slid my index finger to the nearest pebble on the map. “My parents’ place wasn’t in your file, so these points aren’t likely to be targets.”

“Not shifter targets,” he clarified, eyes moving over the marked towns. “But humans maybe? It might be part of their government infiltration.
